Even More Wine-ing

Post by Kadian »

We've had some drama lately, so I want to get back to a topic everyone can agree on, alchohol.

I know we did a favorite beer post before, but I know I'm not the only wine drinker, so let's do a favorite wine post.

Favorite daily drinker: Red Truck Merlot
Favorite Brand: Ravenswood (Zin and Merlot mostly)
Favorite Recently Tried: Sobon Estate, Fiddletown Zinfandel (but you have to get over the screwcap phobia first)

White wine is for teh UlTra-no.0b!1!!1!11onetwo!!2

Hey that is handy

I don't drink much wine, but i do cook with it a lot.

Basically, anything around $10 a bottle that doesnt make me puke works for me. Red > White

I'm a big fan of white wines. There's a reason that whites were so popular for many years, and that reds only became popular after health studies came out saying that drinking red was good for you... It's because white tastes better.

I like a fruity white with friends out on the town at night, not too dry, or a big dry white that reaches out and grabs you by the throat and makes you pay attention with a meal.

As for varietals and regions, I'm not experienced enough to know that, but I know what I enjoy drinking.

I wasn't aware that red was better healthwise. I just tend to like heavier foods and i think red wines stand up better to those types of flavors.

Even with my roast chickens i make a redwine reduction.. white wine just wouldnt have the same rich flavor to it.

I do use white wine often, but mostly to add a small fruit accent to things. Like a cup or so with water when simmering sausages before grilling. Or to light up some veggies after a quick blanch.

I guess a nice chardonnay wouldnt go bad with rissoto. Other than that.. just pour me some sake.

To me white wine is like drinking Bud Light, yes it's easy to drink, any 10 year old girl could drink it, its fruity and light and sweet...bleeech. I can see why an average Joe might like it better, it's easy to pick up a glass of white wine with no wine drinking experience and enjoy it, it's like a wine cooler, easy to drink. For the record, I don't hate whites, but reds are just so much better once you get used to them.

I promise if you guys spend some time drinking red wine, not chugging it of course, but focusing on the flavors that are in it, you will get hooked like me. That's not to say you have to sip it daintily either, but it's better to take a drink and let the flavor sit in your mouth for a bit.

And Mac, there is no way that people only drink red wine cause it's better for you either, people just learn the flavors are better when their palate matures enough to appreciate it. To say that "reds only became popular when.." doesn't even make sense, people have enjoyed both red and white wine for centuries.

i do like porto though, with either some fine cheese, or high % cocoa chocolate...
but porto falls under the sweet banner as well

Yeah, it does, but it's a robust sweet that is full of flavor. It's not something that I can drink a lot of, but like you said, it's great with a strong flavored cheese (like a long aged chedder) or dark chocolate..also things I can't take much of at once, but great in small amounts.

Look at wine sales stats from roughly 1900-1975, you'll see that whites outsold reds, and you can't claim that the world's palates hmatured overnight, right at the same time that studies showed that a medeterranean diet, with red wine, was condusive to a longer life. Regular folk started picking up red because they could get a buzz, a good flavour, and feel good about it.

Whites can have as much depth of flavour, can stand up to robust foods like a rare steak, and do it all without being abusive. Whites are like a scotch, and reds like bourbon. The white has more range, and you don't have to TRY to enjoy it.
