(after a fucking nervous week)

Post by Skitril »

Well I've been working here and there after graduating back a few years ago, stuff like 3-6 month contracts, temping, part time, yadda yadda ya all over the place, but haven't had any success applying for permanent full time work for a while, probably a bit unlucky but anyway.

In late march, I got an interview with the an ISP, more of a meet and greet thing really, "we'll call you back in a couple weeks or so after we sort through all the applicants". I thought it was just standard response so really wasn't expecting to hear from them, but they called me back and were all like hey, we narrowed it down to these guys and we want to do a second round, come on the 19th ! So I'm like, awesome !

2 days after that march interview, I got an interview with a national bank that I unfortunately didn't get, though I impressed them enough to say that "we'll call you back if there's anything that opens up". But as it turns out the noob they hired got busted for some drugs or some shit like that a couple weeks after starting (GG !), so a spot opened up and they called me back and asked if I wanted the position - ... please advise us by the 19th. God dammit.

I told the bank that I had an interview with the ISP that same day, and he was pretty sympathetic and understanding considering the circumstances, but on the flip side he also needed that spot filled asap and had a couple of others on the list too. So yea, basically he said, if I rang him by next wed the spot was mine, which was really nice of him.

The ISP is really nice though. 3rd largest in Australia, really treat their staff well (TONS of benefits from stock options to free food/drinks/massages at work !) and it was really easy for me to get to - 40 mins - 1 hour at most, and in Sydney, that's considered fantastic (comparison, Bank = 1 hr 30 mins at least). Their "interview" really turned out to be a 4 hour inquisition, though - first, a more in depth interview with the HR girl, various testing on paper and PC, the "lunch", then roleplay and a final interview, this time with HR girl + 2 supervisor/manager types ( T_T ) We started off with ~10-ish people, by lunch there was only 6 left, by the final interview there was only 4 of us... which I took as a good sign, but sheesh do they pile on the pressure. "We'll get back to you guys within friday 21st latest !". Damn. Me, on the way home =

1) Call back bank now, take their offer ?
2) Wait for ISP and see what's up ?

Surprisingly the bank guy called me, still hadn't filled the position, though he had another guy pretty much ready to start, and he was coming in later in the afternoon for a talk. "If ISP doesnt come through, you call me and we'll get you in by tomorrow. Otherwise, I will get back to you back tomorrow morning, because we need this position filled by thursday 21st so we can a day or two of basic training". T_T

Basically, if the ISP got to me early and said yes, that was the best possible outcome, I could call the bank guy say thanks yadda ya give it to the other guy. On the other hand, if they said no, I could call the bank guy and he'd give the job to me (for some reason he really liked me, but couldn't authorise anything special to sweeten the deal since banks are really rigid and structured as they are). In the worst case scenario I'd be fucked up the ass and come out with nothing.

Thurs morning - has the ISP made a decision yet ? No... I took a small risk though, thanked the bank guy and said not going to waste anymore time, give the spot to the other guy. Immediately I'm thinking ... shit, I just, Skitril = fucking screwed, but still a bit hopeful since in the last interview, I did manage to impress the ISP guys, so I was crossing my fingers, and going nuts at the same time.

Thursday night - ISP calls back... HR girl was all

ISP : "Skitril, thanks for the interview the other day, but unfortunately.."

Me : "no thats alright, someone's got to give the bad news, thanks for giving me the opportunity" meanwhile I'm *thinking AH CRAP, AH SHIT FUCK GOD DAMN IT ALL I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE FIRST THING THAT WAS OFFERED FFS"

ISP : "please let me finish. Ahem. Unfortunately for the other people, you are the one we selected for this position, I'm going to courier to paperwork down and it will arrive tomorrow morning, you start next week"

That's all I fucking heard she was saying some other stuff but I was more or less like... "yea, great, uh, ok thx". After I hung up it was all

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT !!!!!!!!!!!111oneone

tl,dr : I finally got permanent, full time work at a nice company.

forgot to say what the jobs were

bank - customer help desk (ie, phone monkey), 38-40 hours a week, timeslot offered was 8am-4pm, pay was ~37k + super. Pretty far up north, arround 1 hr 30 mins in best conditions, if bad could be 2hrs+ not many benefits other than the bank name, everyone here knows it which could be good or bad... pretty boring atmosphere thoguh (think - cubicles in the matrix) but relatively easy to do I guess.

isp - support technician, still a phone monkey, but internal help desk rather than customer support. 40 hours a week, not sure about hours yet, I'd be rostered on an 8 hour shift between 11am-11pm, pay ~40k + LOTS of benefits, really fucking easy to get to, nice open atmosphere with good views of the harbor, opera house and all that jazz.

yay

Lol my avatar is called "The Laughing Man" logo. It's taken from the Ghost in the Shell anime, a really good futuristic based detective cop series.

The text is from the old book The Catcher in The Rye which I studied for english in high school, as soon as I saw it, clicked immediately to what it was.

It reads : "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes". full quote includes next sentence which is (That way I wouldn't have to have any goddam stupid useless conversations with anybody)
