I bought a 60 gig ipod back when the color screen photos came out. I thought it was a nice product and did a little research on it and waited until they came in and bought one on the spot.
My only complaint is the battery life of a ipod, and thats only because I leave it on sleep for extended periods of time with the charger off. This adds up to a lack of battery when I want to use it, but since I have the little bugger hooked up to my home stereo as much as its with me I find that charging with the wall adapter is quite easy and troublefree. My little buddy also charges while updating, and when I get into the mood it can be updating for a hour or so a day.
Thinking of itunes as little more then a music buying service is short sighted. Having a ton of cd's I needed to burn onto the ipod I found that just blasting through them with the itunes conversion software was the easiest way. If you don't use itunes for pulling from cd's you need to convert from mp3 to a different type of file. wmv I think is the extension, so basically the mp3 gets converted from a cd or source, and reconverted into the new format. Skipping the second conversion is best imho since you aren't risking any data loss or corruption.
Files don't save automatically in a 1-x format when using a uploaded file. Kind of annoying when you download a cd and need to set up track numbers to keep albums in line. Without setting it with track numbers its just alphabetical.
Promos! itunes and pepsi run a free download promo once a year or so... With the way I work and being in retail thats a tasty savings while trying new music without scavaging other services.

I banked like 20 some odd caps with free tunes over the 2 or so months they had the promo going.
I wouldn't go without a straight up ipod right now, the software is constantly updated, the add ons are reliable and with just shy of 10 gig uploaded and 2700ish songs I know this thing is going to be with me a while. Seven days of music is a godsend when on a long trip or if you want a wide variety. If I had the option to buy a new one instead of my current I'd have waited for the nano since the standard ipod can be a little bulky. I'm even considering getting the girlfriend a shuffle for when she's walking the dog.
/proipod rant off.
