Coolest utility programs...

Post by The Mac »

I'm sure that we all have them. Some little handy programs or useful websites that we've picked up like lint over the years. Things like an MP3 retagger, or a great online spell-checker, or www.mailinator.com . Just the really handy-to-have little tools that you would like to share.

A few of my favourites:
ForecastFox is a handy little add-on for firefox that gives a small weather info bar in the status bar.
Spybot TeaTimer is a handy tool that can be installed with SpybotSD, and it prevents ANY changes to the windows registry without your permission. Useful for preventing, and not just removing, spyware.
VLC media player is a play-it-all movie player. If your movie player refuses to play something, odds are good that VLC can and will do it right.

Anyone else have some to share?

i... do not.

i am useless
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

There probably isn't any meaning in life. Perhaps you can find something interesting to do while you are alive. Like how you found that flower. Like how I found you.

Buttons aren't toys.

wel in conjoncture with vlc player, i use bs player, for when i download movies wich needs subtitles, its the only one i found wich works good
it was great for when i downloaded final fantasy advent children

being an electronics guy, and wanting to delve a little into case modding, i do like this website : http://led.linear1.org/
its pretty much all you need to know to make led works, its quite easy to follow

and i use undisker for all my image file needs as well

azureus is a pwn bit torrent program, works well with thepiratebay.com and demonoid.com as well
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I thought this was pretty sweet:

http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/blog ... 33325.html

Its a safe and easy way for people who aren't Nic Burns, your company's computer guy, to make their comp run a little faster.

EDIT: theres also the 'intermediate' version, but people dont seem to like it so much

Well here goes:

Registry Mechanic - Great for cleaning your registry from old/recycled stuff on your computer.

Ad aware - Latest version, Im sure we all know what this does.

Spyware Blaster - Another nifty online tool that blocks a hell of a lot of tracking cookies and bad active x controls. I love this progam. Higly reccomended.

Du Meter - This is a program that measures your actual download speeds more accurate than your browsers.

Im currently using the Aston shell replacement. Here's a screenshot of my setup. Image

Norton Ghost - If your not familiar with this, it lets you make an image copy of your hard drive so pretty much the next time you have to reformat your computer, you set everything up the way you want it, make an image and have it backed up. Next time you reformat, you load it and your back to that. Another one of my loves lol.

Diskeeper - Its like an upgraded version of the standard windows defrag. Got a few optimizations that I assume do there job. I find defragging slighty a little bit faster but nothing crazy.

Thats about all I can think of right now. :P If you guys want any of this let me know, I got them all saved.

I agree on SpywareBlaster, if I keep this one upgraded I hardly ever need to run AdAware.

AdAware/SpywareBlaster/Spybot S&D keeps you 'puter clean IMO.

Registry Mechanic - this I have to try! Methinks I have loads of old shit in my registry, heh..
