nothing sweeter than a quiet pc

Post by shiram »

well after months of toiling and upgrading i have finally achieved a quiet pc
its not noiseless, but damn its quiet now
replacing the process heatsink/fan combo for a zalman al/cu cnps 7000b processor cooling unit
bought a heatpipe video card
replaced the northbridge fan by a passive heatsink
chassis fan is a 120mm fan, mod volted down to 7volts

the noisiest thing in the pc now is the harddrive, and im not gonna change that now, its just not worth the 100 bucks to change
kinda funny how i put so much work into making this thing quiet, but i really love the sound of silence ;-)
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

For some reason I always envisioned you as one with music playing all the time... would never hear your PC.

that would be quite true
but my puter is in my room, and for long downloads, i'd like to keep it on at night (downloaded a nearly 12 gig not too long ago)
and the thing was just too loud for me to be able to sleep
even if i had music going while trying to sleep

and besides, i like messing with that kinda stuff

I actually can't sleep to music.. it has to be a mechanical sound. Like a fan or something.

That reminds me of when we went to visit my gajillionaire uncle on Chesepeake Bay... They live in this huge beautiful home which is designed so every bedroom has window that open on the bay. After our first night there, my stepson, who was 13 at the time, said the sound of the surf kept him awake.

My uncle about had a hemmorage!

That also works for me. Different type of sleep though. I think its also the air near shore. Easier to breathe.

Oh how i love the gentle humming of machines at work.

i really cant sleep with any noise at all, i have serious insomnia problems, even when totally quiet i cant get to sleep in under 1-2 hours on a normal night, and with noise i just cant focus enough to drown it out and i just cant sleep

i probably should see a doctor about it but poor + uninsured = lose

Same here. I read stuff like Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes creator) to shut off the internal dialog always going on in my head.

My next upgrade:

passively cooled mobo
pretty quiet video card like X1900XT(X) or G71
120 mm 1 fan PSU
my "old" triple fan, quiet case

i havent heard of passively cool mobo.. that probably doesnt include processor cooling, right?

as for vid cards, i know of heatpipes, wich work pretty well for passive cooling

and i know antec makes a fanless psu as well
all options i would look at for a new pc

I meant a mobo with passively cooled chipset, e.g. ASUS A8N32-SLI, A8N-SLI Premium or A8R-MVP.

Heatpipes, passive heatsinks... no annoying small high rpm fans.

the newer models of it are passive though
