WORLD CUP

Post by flint »

Germany really came out gangbusters even though they seemed to forget what an offsides trap is. England certaintly didnt look like a contender to be world champions but a win is a win. Sweden had a tough time finding the net against a goalie playing like a man possessed, although they should certaintly have their spirits up after they see Englands performance. I didnt see Argentina play but like I said, a win is a win. Sorry Dar, but I think the Polish squad should be ashamed of themselves because they seemed to just flat out give up before the final whistle was blown - maybe they thought it would be better to save their energy for the next match?

heres what the boys from the states need to keep in mind over the next week:

winner of group E plays runner up of group F, runner up of group E plays winner of group F

which means should we win our group we play (almost certainly) Japan, Croatia, or Australia - but should we be runner up we play Brazil[/i]

I agree with ya "analysis" of the games. Germany had a good offense but made mistakes in the defence, Lahm was just amazing all thru the game.

Neither England nor Paraguay impressed me, but neither did Sweden unfortinately :( My team played like they done so many times in the past, whenever they are the better team and should control the game - they become ineffective and can't make goals. It's really frustrating to watch!

Argentina Cote d'ivory(sp?) was a good game, not a easy win for argentina, too bad that cote d'ivory "woke up" too late and started to put real pressure on argentina.

Well, so far five games played, a few really nice goals, almost all favorites won ( 'cept sweden :( ). Lookin' forward to todays games:

Serbien-Montenegro-Holland <-- this one is a must-see
Mexiko-Iran
Angola-Portugal

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to say, Sorry Dar if u read this, but Poland played really crappy :-/ Hopefully they'll get their shit together and start playing better next game.

Argentina didn't play at top form for 90 minutes, but when they were on - they were amazing. Definately the best team to play so far.

Germany's defense had way too many holes. England needs Rooney back or a Michael Owen that can actually handle the ball. Crouch looked way better than Owen who just looked out of shape and slow. England has always been too quick to take a 40 yard shot and too predictable, why build up an attack for a 40 yard shot?

Watching the portugal - angola game right now, half time. So far Portugal has impressed me, at least for the first ~20 or so minutes, they look quite dangerous. Angola tho aren't very good, a coupla of good individual performances, but as a team they are kinda crappy. Looking forward to the second half, hopefully portugal will keep playing football and not completely stop playing as they sometimes do when they're in the lead vs a lesser good team.

Football = English game, it's called football. The two countries where the sport is biggest (England and Brazil) call it football, it's called football. The two continents where football is biggest are Europe and South America, both call it football, it's called football.

American football is mainly played with the hands anyway.....

man we really did get destroyed, about the only positive you can say for the american team right now is that they have a killer offsides trap lol

italy looked more than good enough to beat the USA, and honestly Ghana looks like a better team than us after one game all around

australia picked up a huge win, a draw against Croatia is basically all they need to move on

Brazil looked good today, but beatable. What was up with Ronaldo? He's fat and doesn't even run - Robihno should start the rest of the games.

poland vs germany has been the best match so far, anyone else watch it?

now that all the teams have played Id say that 6 jump out as frontrunners for the tournament - Brazil, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Argentina, and the Netherlands

I agree that that Germany vs. Poland match being the best. Although Poland couldn't seem to put up too much of an offensive game they did a hell of a job keeping Germany from scoring a goal until the 91st minute. If one of their players didn't get a red card I think they could've kept it at a tie.

Polands Goalie + Crossbar were definitely the players of the game though. ^_^
End

I say, add Spain and I'd prolly agree. I know Spain usually(always) fail in the WC, but they actually convinced me they have what it takes this year. If only they keep Raul out! Man, their offense is just amazing!

Ronaldo, just ain't what he once were, never will be. Now he's got headaches and shit too, he's out in their next game methinks.. mehopes.

Sweden is going for the gold this year!!!! :D

Gaah, we have amazing weather here in Sweden, so it's really hard to not spend time in the sun and go inside to watch football. Therefore I missed the Argentina - S&M game :( :( :( 6 - 0!! That's just insane, considering that S&M played great defence all through the qualifications to the WC. So, yeah, Argentina is a possible(likely) winner.

And yeah, Sweden didn't make a good impression, didn't play the best football, but at least they won and that's what counts. We've had a lousy record these last coupla games before the WC, have had alot of trouble scoring goals, so every goal is a step in the right direction at least..
