2005 a media year in review

Post by shiram »

all in all it wasnt too impressive

with cd, movies and games not selling as much as expected, one as not much to wonder before they realize this year didnt bring much quality in those domains

movies :
well i havent seen it, but the general word around king kong is that its disapointing and too long, and it was suppose to make a bad year in movies somewhat good. it seems to have failed its mission...
my top 3 would be

3. Batman Begins : finally another good batman, while its not riveting, its plainly a great comeback considering where batman stood with movies before

2. Star wars : about the same as batman actually, its good, and somewhat redeems past efforts, but not much more

1 Sin city : well finally something new and bold. this one takes the cake, actors, plot, action its got it all. actually the only dvd i bought from the 2005 dvd harvest

Music wise this year is the same as most of the recent past years. The industry blames the internet for its losing of revenue, while they should consider the product they put out instead of just blaming one phenomenon wich they struggle to have any kind of control over. Let's face it, not much interesting is coming out these days.
i'll just list 2 here, the good and the bad one

Nine inch nails : With teeth : well what a disapoitment for me that was. Catchy, pop, commercial, blend uninspired. A complete cut from the supposed dark brooding enesemble that NIN once was. Plainly, theres no song i like on there... and so many i dislike. It just seems a half-assed effort.

Opeth : Ghost Reveries : Well what to say, more progressive-ness goodness, though they do depart from their heavier sounds wich reigned on their older albums. Still its a great coherent record. Excellent musician playing well thought of inspired music. Mikael Akerfldt is excellent on vocals, and is consistent. Most definately my best album of 2005

as for games, well i havent followed it as much, but my highlights would be X-men legends 2... and thats about that, nothing really got my interest except this one, i havent found any great rpg's wich are my favorite type of games...

hopefully 2006 will bring something more
x-men 3 could be a good action movie, though they have alot of characters to devellop
final fantasy x2... well they rarelly disapoint
music wise i have great anticipation for devin townsend's new album, synchestra. Hopefully more metal/industrial/progressive/ambiant goodness!
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I agree with Sin City. In fact, Sin City and Syriana were the only movies I watched in theaters for 2005.

Syriana? never even heard of it, but i definitely agree on Sin City - that movie was fcuking insane! Can't wait for the next one!
Did also love Batman, think it was one of the best movies last year. And ofc SW, which I also loved (gogo the dark side!!!! Love it when Anakin/Darth vader slaughter all of those pesky lil'padawans, hahahaha)

Since my shitty comp can't play new games, and all hell broke lose in school, i haven't really played any new games, so Rome:TW is still the game I played most in 2005.

I discovered System of a down not long ago(december actually), really good music! Prolly the best new experience with music this past year.

Never seen this movie poster? Maybe its not released in Europe yet. It's not exactly a big movie. It's one of those "award" films that few people see.

I'd much rather listen to their music. In fact. Any music.

The movie itself is a bit complicated but it all ties together at the end. All I can say is that you shouldn't be watching this movie if you're feeling tired or sleepy. My friends and I watched this movie at a midnight showing and both of them fell asleep. I was the only who watched the entire film. I admit, if you're watching it that late, you might pass out because it's not exactly an action film.

good movies this year that I saw:
Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire - - best of series, fantastic mythology and symbolism and what better time to whip that stuff out than at the onset of adolescence - - I love it.

Batman Begins - Nolan is solid if not a little too safe in his direction, Bale is really good and the butler I forget his name is even better - the scarcrow from freakin scary and I can't wait for that actor (28 days later) to make a big movie with him in lead

Jarhead - This was all about the ambience and documentary feel - not one pulled punch just shot very straight - made the couple intense sequences that much more intense - I think this one will age well..I love Mendes he could kick Scorsese's ass any day

-and a whole shitload of movies that didn't happen to come out this year but saw a bunch of awesome ones...

I gotta agree with batman begins. I'll let you know what i think about Syriana when i watch it tonight.

Ep 3, would have had the same impact on me if you had played starwars music to a guy taking a dump. Maybe more of an impact, because at least i couldnt bitch about how it didn't make a damn bit of sense.

hahaha roam

yeah I thought ep3 was...flat. I was sort of bearing with it and then they were fighting on the floating lava chunks and for the 42nd time someone just fucked the whole flow of anything going on with another ridiculous bit of Lucas dialogue basically explaining the action - - the guy writes as well as the average junior undergrad film student who may or may not be concentrating on screenwriting and it seems like he doesn't let people edit his stuff either or a lot would have been cleaned up. The visuals were cool but I dunno....just didn't do it. Ep2 I liked a lot more - - that started off with such a bang and just had a great arc and kept me interested.

good luck to lucas making the young indiana jones thing on tv...he's putting everything he's got into it so it could be interesting to see how it shapes up...

i really wish directors would stop "cashing in" their old decent movies.

new indiana jones movies arent needed, they would just undermind the integrity the originals had (which was pretty badass imo)

same with starwars ep1-3 and 7-9

truthfully for movies all i ever needed was 4-6 and the rest of them i couldve figured out playing video games or reading the books (yeah theres books)

BTW just finished playing all the way through BG1 and BG2 and BG-Throne of Bhaal. damn its so much fun when you do the whole thing you notice shit you never caught before, its really cool.

problem is you cant use the same character.

like in BG1 you main char cant be a mage because youll fucking be worthless (max at lvl 7 :() cast like 7 spells a day barely

then in Bg2 and ToB they fucking own face (or sorcerer, i prefer sorc)

wonder if theyll ever make a BG 3 such a good series.

I don't have any problem with them making new movies, like eps 1-3. I just wish he had taken 30 minutes to.. oh i don't know.. WRITE A SCRIPT.

But redoing old classic movies should be totally off limits.
