Building a PC gaming rig

Post by shiram »

So with SC2 teasing me, and the future holding a Diablo game in hand, I need a computer to run them.

Here's my parts list so far :

Case : CoolerMaster Haf 912 If I'm under budget could go for a CoolerMaster Storm Enforcer

GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 AM3+ motherboard, mostly for the 3 pci-express slots, for crossfire down the line.

SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 1GB

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor. Thought about going with a six-core, but it seems for gaming multi-core is not as good.

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Will buy another set after a while, or if gaming performance is not up to standard.

I got a SATA drive at home I was planning to use, but if not that, I could go for an SSD, I've been looking at the Intel 320 and Crucial M4, but am not sure how much space I would need.

Any advice or help?
Went with AMD is cheaper for equivalent performance.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Just my two cents, but I'll never buy Radeon again. Their crappy drivers makes tweaking the performance tedious and cumbersome, and if you're anything like me (I just want things to work without a hazzle) then nvidia is just much better. Their drivers are always up to date and if you like to install older games and re-play them every now and then, they're better at that too.

When I bought my last comp I choosed between the mid-tier cards, NVIDIA 9800 GTX or the Radeon 45XX something something (dun remeber exaxtly). The radeon had better performance in tests but was slightly over-clocked from the start and ran at much higher temperatures, needing a bigger and noisier fan. I choose the nvidia and have been happy ever after, that card is still doing it's job and the newest drivers work fine with newer games like Skyrim, MW3 and BF3, even though the card is like two years old.

I'm no guru when it comes to things like this though, so others with more knowledge than me might tell you the direct opposite.

I chose performance, less noise and heat, and what I wound up with is a HD Radeon 6950.
Never had an issue with them Readeon, but the last time I was really gaming on a computer, well I was playing a werewolf in Lords of Destruction.
Still the card was highly reviewed and recommanded by users.
Should be building this week, if the parts come in.

Had a beta invite for SWTOR, and it looked like any other mmorpg's.
Sorry but pass on that one.

I'd rather hit myself in the dick with a hammer then reload SC2.

It's not a 6 core, but a 4 core, and I went with the cheaper AMD to fit in a better graphics card, overall I'm pleased with the computer.
