Star Trek Online. First impressions.

Ship combat seems slow in the tutorial, as in there was no tactical sense in moving other then exposing fresh shields to the enemy. Mind you all ships have been pretty much stationary that I've fought at this point.

Ground combat seems SWG-CU like, fast refreshing timers. Theres a aim option that boosts the damage done and it seems like melee hits are rocking with the default one being a kb.

Toon creation. Like to customize your toon? there aren't going to be clones out there, theres dozens of choices in each branch and you can go with a standard race like Human or Vulcan or create your own race. Squirrels was reborn with the same basic look from SWG first run Squirrels very easily.

I like it so far, but the servers haven't been setup for huge amounts of people yet and have some stability issues currently.

I got to play with a buds open key for a few hours this morning and I gotta tell you the game feels good. graphically, it sucks for me but thats because I have lower than required settings and it looks horrid. Ive seen video footage of it and it looks tight. I really enjoy the space combat though.

Its good, just not great.

Its WAR all over again, grinding the same shit, doing the same missions... All the missions feel the same, and I'll go through it.

Space, 50/50 shot of combat right away. Or you do a patrol circuit and get ambushed.
Go to ground for a dumbed down ground game that detracts from the rest of the game.
Go back to space to do something.

Repeat.

I saw a few people say that the space game is what makes it, cause the ground game is just a reskinned city of heroes

Not quite, some of the basics are put in, I remember my short time playing CoV and having some psychic attack that did a knockback and damage. guess what skill I picked in STO...

There is ZERO revolutionary things that will change the future of MMO's in this game. First I'll go over two of the greatest MMO inventions of all time.

1. WoW. A game that anyone can play, anyone can enjoy and everyone has played. What did WoW do to change the future of MMO's? Basically it comes down to anyone from 6-600 years of age can play it, enjoy it and advance through the levels. Its simple mind numbing fun that keeps people coming back for more. Everything anyone else does or has done is done (is that too many dones?) better in WoW.

2. Huge player driven economy that isn't based on some rare item. I'm talking about Galaxies, the greatest MMO ever fucked in the ass without lube. (or was that the customers...) Everything costed money, to make money you had to spend it. And spend you did. Armor broke? buy new armor. Need money for armor? Harvest resources and sell them to the weaponsmith. Need a new gun? Sell resources to the Armorsmith. Got a rare item, go fuck yourself because for 200K anyone can buy an item that works just as well, only it takes longer to kill with it.

STO's contribution is a sub par at best space game (didn't pvp in beta) that required countless public instances to get good gear. It reminds me of a shittier version of WAR's pvp keep raids. I won a science console for my ship that increased plasma bolt damage by 8... Nothing anyone found did plasma bolt damage, plasma torpedos don't count because its a torpedo.

Worthless away team missions. Honestly they could delete 90% of the missions and have you beam down and back up to save the headache of another away mission. They're like SWG:JTL escort missions before they fixed them, 39 mins of pointless movement.

I pretty much agree with what you said, Crow, with one reservation - I really don't think that whatever you name in an MMO, WoW does it better. It's a wonderfully accessible game for sure, one that is highly polished as well but it has two fatal flaws IMO:

1. It's incredibly shallow in terms of story and atmosphere. After leveling a toon for a while, you basically forget what your ultimate goal and mission were. It doesn't convey that epic, purpose-driven feeling as e.g. LotRO does, where you have epic quests, books, and everything is connected in a seamless, engrossing story. WoW falls flat on its face in terms of the "RP" part of RPG.

2. It's a fucking grind in every aspect, it basically condones and promotes no-liferism. Whatever you want, good drops, badges, money, mounts, PvP gear, rare gems, honor, arena points - you have to grind your ass off to get them. In LotRO, the focus is more shifted towards social aspects, helping each other, casual play. WoW is tailored to grinders, raiders. It's simply an addictive, superficial grindfest. Most MMOs are. Not all though.

Still, when Cataclysm comes, I may roll a new rogue and try to level him. I'm not sure though whether I'll be able to play this game casually, without addiction, like LotRO.

SWG imo, is still one of the best sandbox mmo's on the market even though they push the box towards more linear gaming than it was in its golden years. Some of the aspects that make it unique are still alive while they did take some of the more prominent aspects away. And why? They saw WoW making all this money and wanted to capitalize on it. They thought that if they made their Star wars mmo more like WoW, people would flock to it. In reality, a good business owner would see what the CUSTOMERS want and feed that instead of watching what some other playerbase wants and go with that. Its nice that they wanted to bring in some of that coin they were otherwise losing to Blizzard from WoW but they had a good thing going on in SWG.

Star Trek will hold a lot of peoples attention for a while and only die hards trekkies will stay in the long run

I pre-ordered this morning.

A: Because I'm a tool.
B: I'm looking for something new and no one I know is playing this dog shit.
C: I liked WAR and public quests.
D: I'm a tool.
E: I can do an away mission and be done for a day and not give a shit later on.
F: Its only mildly addicting and won't be a major time sink.
G: Cloaking birds of prey are awesome and I can't wait to blow up noobs with my twink Klingon. Even though gear seems pretty solid for each level and a twink won't be that much more powerful.
