On November 17, 2006, Richards performed standup comedy at The Laugh Factory in West Hollywood, California. After an African-American heckler began disturbing Richards, he responded with several aggressive and racially-charged comments. Richards told the heckler that "fifty years ago we'd have you upside-down with a fork in your ass," a comment widely understood in the media as a reference to the United States' history of lynching.[5] A cell-phone camera recording of the incident was made by an audience member during the show.
After the heckler had stopped shouting taunts at Richards, Richards responded by saying: "You can talk, you can talk! You're brave now, motherfucker!" As the heckler was taken outside the room, Richards shouted: "He's a nigger! He's a nigger! He's a nigger!" At one point, Richards was denounced by someone in the audience as "a fucking cracker-ass motherfucker!"[6], to which Richards responded "Cracker-ass?, You calling me cracker-ass nigga"?. Richards' outburst lasted about two minutes before audience members began leaving and he dropped his microphone and walked off the stage, without an explaination or appology. After a short period of time, an employee of the establishment walked on stage and apologized for Richards' behavior.[7][8] During a satellite appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman on November 20, 2006, Richards apologized, saying, "For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry. I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this."[9] He described his outburst as one of rage.[10] Kenny Kramer commented that "He had a tantrum. Michael is not racist; he is just not a very streetwise performer".[11] Comedian George Lopez said that he believed the reason for the outburst was Richards' inexperience in stand-up comedy and dealing with hecklers.[12] As a result Richards was permanently banned from performing at any of the Laugh Factory comedy clubs.[13]

I don't really think this is a bad thing. And i would be the first person who would say death to him, if i thought this was bad.
Hes an amatuer comedian on stage in a comedy club, and starts getting heckled. He is trying to fight back, and obviously has no skills. He was probably trying to be funny, and didn't understand he crossed a line.
It's not like a cop pulled him over for drunk driving and he started screaming JEW!!!!!
