Work, work.

Post by RoboTurtle »

I have two jobs: Working in a milkshake shop, and as a sound engineer at a venue.
As I am on a 'gap year'-ish before I go to university I am working 'part time' and spending the rest of the time doing my music stuff (guitar practice, writing and recording music). I aim to have my time heavily bias towards the music stuff, but this is not going as planned.

Because I live pretty close to both of them (20 and 10 mins walk respectively) my bosses tend to call on me to fill in a lot.

I have been working like a fucking son of a bitch recently. I started at the milkshake place on 1 day a week, due to changes and me > other emplyees (:P) this has changed and I now work 3 (regularly, but often asked to do extra days and hours).

E.g. I was called up on wednesday and asked to do a couple of hours in the day at the Milkshake shop, and I had a gig doing sound in the evening.
Then today I get asked if I can come into work (milkshake shop) early, I manage to give them an extra half an hour, luckily as my boss knew I have been working loads recently I got to finish half an hour earlier (avoiding clean up).
I then get a call at about 630 from the venue asking me to come and do sound as no engineer had turned up, I was definately NOT supposed to be working. So I oblige as they had no one else, the gig was horrible- punk/hardcore guys who just acted dickish.

I now have work tomorow from 10-6, followed by another gig (split with another sound man) until 11.
I am then working saturday 11-630.

The milkshake shop is really physically draining, all day on my feet while very repetatively lifting, carrying, pouring, scooping (hard ice cream) while there is a queue out the door (school holidays).
We also have an assistant manager who definately doesn't take her share of the work, and doesn't take criticism very well. (The perk is that I'm the only guy in a staff of 10 or so).
The sound finishes reasonably late (considering I still have to get home and don't usually get time for proper eating (have to be there from 5-11).

I need to spend way more time doing my music stuff, but am working so much- or am shattered from working. I haven't had much of a social life for a while now- this wouldn't bother me so much if I were just doing my music stuff, but I am working so much just for money.

I have come to realise how little I actually care for money- this may be because I'm making quite a bit at the moment (although not spending it) but my time really is worth more than £5 ($8.75) or £8 ($14) per hour. (Remember that everything is more expensive over here).

I think I may ask for less work, but the shop really needs me as we are understaffed and it's very busy at the mo.

Not really sure why I've made this post, but it definately falls under the rant category.

ARGHH I need to sleep now, rant over.

you don't even have to quit, but if the management of the milkshake place appreciate you the way it seems, just tell them straight up that you need to cut back on your shifts due to personal needs. Offer to help train up any new employee, and any owner/manager worth their salt will think you are great for keeping them in the loop.

This brings up a rant with me... What makes more sense:

I'm on line for the milkshake counter.

Im in line for the milkshake counter.

For the first 30 years of my life, I was IN line for things, and now it seems I'm ON line for things. Now which is it and why?

on line? wtf is that?

Anyhow, Robo, you couldnt spend 2 days working at my place of employment if yer complaining about a milkshake shop.

then again, if you worked 2 days where I work, you'd have the motive and the means to glock some stupid fuckers

In line.

I'm never getting a real job.

Milkshake shop is actually a lot harder than I or any of the other employees thought it would be, it's physically draining and VERY repetitive.
