I took the GRE (graduate record examinations) general test last year. Is the GMAT anything like that?

A GRE vs. GMAT score comparison is difficult, but in general the GMAT is the harder exam. Put side-by-side, the GMAT math and reading comprehension questions are more difficult for the comparable skill level. International students may find the GRE harder because of the vocabulary required. The question of GMAT or GRE will probably be determined by the requirements of the graduate programs. Virtually all major business schools require the GMAT as well as some graduate economics programs. The GRE is used for non-business related graduate programs.

Feel free to tell me about it though.

The GRE was mostly testing your thought process not your knowledge of a specific subject. For instance they would ask a complicated math question that would take forever if you were to do it step by step, but you could answer it quickly by using logic to rule out certain answers. The same thing happens in the vocabulary section. They might do an analogy and you have no idea what the definitions of the words are, but by comparing the words in question you could figure it out. Instead of thinking "A is to B as C is to <blank>" you might look at it like "Verb is to Plural Noun as Verb is to <blank>" and there would only be one option that is a plural noun. Dunno if that helps or not.

Very helpful, was it harder than you expected, did you take any prep classes for it? did you think they helped, or would have helped?

I did not take any prep classes. My only preparation for the test was 2 practice tests included in a cd that came with the package. The actual test was exactly like those practice tests so it was just was I was expecting.
