the difference is, we're all on non-ladder... and ladder is cooler
But ladder turns into non-ladder eventually, so ultimately it doesnt matter. But ladder characters, cant play with non-ladder characters, and you can only do certain runewords and find uniques, on the ladder

You should all go on ladder instead, just in case you do play it long enough to afford the greatest rune words. Besides, it doesn't take long for a new ladder season to become saturated with great items even if they should restart it soon after or just before you joined it. And even if you do, than it's always great to be part of the beginning of a ladder because it's eas yto become "rich".
Anyway, it's a win-win situation joining ladder, and no point at all in making new non-ladder chars.
